A few days later, Mr. Harris was back in London carrying on his business at the Court. The police had been of no help in locating the robbers, and Harris assumed the silver was gone for good. But he was a very wealthy man, and felt that the loss of a few pieces of silver was no great tragedy, particularly since no one had been seriously hurt in the robbery.

It was only when his Court business was completed and he returned to his estate four months later that the story of the young boy and the two thieves began to prey on his mind.

Harris lay in his bed, staring at the ceiling. The trip from London had been exhausting, but still he couldn't sleep. What was it about the robbery that was bothering him so?

He had heard the whole story again before going to bed as he followed Morris through the house on his nightly rounds. The butler was unusually conscientious, Harris noticed, in making sure all the windows were sealed and the doors locked from the inside.

"I say, Morris, are you always this careful with the locks?" Harris had said as the butler locked the final door and tucked the big ring of keys safely in his pocket.

"Oh, yes, sir," the butler had said. "Always." And Harris knew he was telling the truth.

But for some reason, Mr. Harris was troubled. I'll speak to Morris again in the morning, he thought, then rolled over and went to sleep.
